School Carnival Set

Published: December 12, 2007

FOREST HILLS - Chamberlain High School hopes to move closer to its goal of getting a new fence by hosting its first winter carnival.

The school is inviting families for games, food and shopping from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Student clubs, local crafters and community groups are participating. Many of the games are geared toward younger students, and the school is hoping families from the neighboring elementary and middle schools attend.

Money raised supports the fence fund, a drive that started last year with a lofty goal. The committee overseeing the efforts expects it could cost more than $150,000 to replace the chain-link fence surrounding Chamberlain's perimeter with a brick and wrought-iron one.

Plant High in South Tampa installed a similar fence in 2003. It was projected to cost $350,000, but in-kind donations helped drop the price to $160,000. The school's Parent-Teacher-Student Association spent years raising the money.

So far, Chamberlain has collected about $15,000, said Brian Hoover, Chamberlain's government teacher and head of the fence fund committee.

The school launched the drive last year during its 50th-anniversary celebration as a way for alumni to commemorate the milestone.

They started with an auction. The committee also has been selling name plates for the backs of auditorium seats for $50 to $200, depending on the seat placement.

The school isn't trying to keep the public out, Hoover said, but to dress up its exterior.
