TAMPA - Twenty-eight area teachers have received national honors through a rigorous certification process.
The teachers recently became National Board Certified, which allows them to get raises. They can qualify for additional bonuses if they mentor a colleague or, in Hillsborough County, teach at a high-poverty school.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards awards the certifications annually. Teachers apply by putting together portfolios that include video of themselves in the classroom and examples of student work, and they take tests in their subject area.
