CARROLLWOOD - A major overhaul of the crossroads at Gunn Highway and Linebaugh Avenue is on the way.
Hillsborough County has been studying how to improve the intersection and is ready to present its findings.
Public works officials and engineers from HDR Engineering will discuss the recommendations and solicit comments at a community meeting tonight.
The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at Carrollwood Elementary School, 3516 McFarland Road.
"It's a safety issue, primarily," said Edd Arnold, the county project manager. "We're trying to improve the intersection to reduce accidents."
Arnold said that intersection saw 94 vehicle crashes over the two-year period from April 2005 to March 2007.
The county has budgeted $2.45 million for the intersection project, which includes the engineering study, design, construction and the purchase of right-of-way. Arnold said the land acquisition costs make up half the project's budget.
Most of the recommended improvements involve adding turn lanes and adjusting the traffic signals to reduce delays.
Possible additions include a right-turn lane for southbound traffic on Gunn heading west on Linebaugh and a right-turn lane for westbound traffic on Linebaugh heading north on Gunn.
More through lanes will mean "more room for people to get out of way to make right-turn lanes," Arnold said.
The project is not scheduled to start until October 2010.
