Lemrow Records Shutout For Tigers

Goaltender Greg Lemrow stood firm as the Tigers upset Freedom 1-0 to leave Newsome Blue as the only remaining undefeated team in the Hillsborough High School Hockey League on Saturday.

The shutout was the Tigers' (2-1) second in as many games, as Nick Johnson kept a clean sheet against Wharton in a 4-0 win in Week 2. This time, Lemrow returned to the net, and Ian Stanley's goal proved to be all the scoring the Tigers would need. Freedom (2-1) was unable to find any production from its roster, as the two teams combined for 70 penalty minutes.

Newsome Blue beat George Jenkins 6-3 to move to 3-0 on the season as Mike Semago had a hat trick for the Wolves.

Newsome Blue (3-0) took a 5-1 lead through two periods as Scott Vargas played provider. Vargas had four assists to go with his goal, while Tom Kowalski and Mike Siegelhofer also found the net.

Jenkins (1-2) got goals from Curtis Bechard and Jason Jensen to cut the Wolves lead to 5-3 in the third period, but the Eagles were unable to get any closer.

Wesley Chapel scored three third-period goals to beat Plant 6-5 as T.J. Johnson had a hat trick and added two assists for the Wildcats (2-1). Johnson leads the league with 10 goals and 13 points.

Plant (0-3) had taken a 5-3 lead at the end of the second period on a hat trick by C.W. Guyer, but the Wildcats came into their own in the third as Daniel Kwitko scored the game-winning goal with just more than three minutes to play.

Newsome White (2-1) won the first shootout of the season as Jim Wheatley scored the game-winner in a 4-3 win against Riverview/Durant (1-1-1). Wheatley had scored twice in regulation, but Joey Heyer of the combined team forced a shootout with 1:30 to play on his second goal of the game and seventh of the season.

Wharton finally got its first win of the season with a 7-3 win against Bloomingdale. Wharton (1-2) was led by Matt Cazes, who had a hat trick, while Connor Castro and Derek Miller added a goal and an assist apiece.

Bloomingdale (1-2) got goals from Mike Wood, Allen Bray and Dan Briggs.

Biuso Finishes Fourth At Hammock Beach

Chris Biuso of Temple Terrace and King High finished fourth at the Florida Junior Golf Tour event at Hammock Beach at Palm Coast on Sunday.

Biuso, who had won the opening under-18 tournament of the season at Summerfield, finished six shots behind champion Julian Suri of St. Augustine. Suri won a three-way playoff against Conner Barry and Taylor Szyndlar on the fourth hole.

In tough conditions, no player shot under par; Szyndlar shot the only even-par round of the tournament. Biuso shot two rounds of 78. George Letson of Tampa finished in a tie for 11th with a two-round total of 160, while Charlie Martin was a six more shots back in a tie for 26th.

Turners Win Team Titles In Longwood

The Tampa Bay Turners Gymnastics program won Level 6 and Level 5 large team titles at the Black Jack Invitational hosted by ACE Gymnastics in Longwood during the weekend.

The Turners Level 6 squad edged out host ACE by 0.2 points, finishing with a total of 112.75. Madalyn Golightly led the Turners, winning flight titles in the vault with a score of 9.600 and the parallel bars with 9.300 on her way to a total of 37.700, the second-highest all-around score across all flights.

Sarah Devoe also won the all-around title in her flight, winning the bars and floor disciplines. Teammate Taylor Salazar won three flight titles on her way to an all-around title, scoring a 9.050 in the bars, a 9.450 in the beam and a 9.200 in the floor.

Other Turners winning flight titles were Brianna Barrett, who scored a 9.650 in the beam, and Mimi Gilbert, who scored a 9.525 in the beam. Olivia Cecil pushed Golightly into second in their flight with a 9.500 in the floor, while Dannie Edmonds scored a 9.650 in the beam, again edging out Golightly for an individual title.

The Turners Level 5 squad finished with 114.600, pushing ACE into second place by 0.8 points. LaFleur's Largo took third, including the team title in the vault.

Makayla Adams pulled off a rare feat, winning a flight's all-around title without winning an individual event. Adams finished second in the vault and beam, and third in the bars and floor, but her total of 37.800 was good enough to edge teammate Krysta Postlethwaite by 0.075 points. Postlethwaite won two individual titles, scoring 9.675 in the bars and 9.500 in the beam, but only scored a 9.050 in the floor to allow Adams to take the title.

Halle Goodwin finished in the top three in all four events, winning the floor (9.500), on her way to an all-around title in her flight. Mikayla Bellardini of LaFleur's Largo won two individual titles, scoring a 9.550 in the vault and a 9.425 in the beam.

Smith Wins Seminole Super Series

Connor Smith of Tampa won the boys under-18 title at the Seminole Lake Tennis Center Super Series, coming from a set down in the final to beat top seed Taylor Albrecht of Sarasota 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Smith, the No. 5 seed, had little difficulty making his way to the final as he beat No. 2 seed Tyler Snook of Tampa 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and No. 8 seed Andy Hersh of Valrico 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Rebecca Bodine of Tarpon Springs reached the final of the girls under-18 division, but was unable to beat Anastasiya Kharchenko of Palm Coast, falling 6-2, 6-3. Bodine had defeated top seed Stephanie Kent of Wesley Chapel 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the final.
