Golf Lover Glad To Get A Bogey

CARROLLWOOD - Almost one month and 55 photographs later, the Carrollwood News & Tribune has chosen a pet in the Halloween costume contest to put on our cover.

The judging was not easy. But after looking through photos upon photos of witches, jesters, princesses and cowboys, we have our lucky winner.

Fred and Gina Tort of Carrollwood Village were delighted to learn their squirmy 4 1/2 -year-old Yorkshire terrier, Bogey, stiffed the competition and made the cover. Below are Gina's e-mail responses to our questions about the couple's Halloween champion dog:

How did Bogey become part of the family?

We went to a dog show to decide what type of dog we wanted and met the breeder who told us a lot about Yorkies and that he had a litter coming up soon and the rest is history!

How did you come up with the name for your pet?

Fred loves golf , and we liked the name Bogey better than Birdie. Bogey often looks up at the TV when we have golf on and he hears his name.

What inspired you to purchase a lobster costume for your pet?

I stopped off at Dog Lover's in Carrollwood, and they had lots of pet costumes, and they loved Bogey so they helped him try on several. When he tried on the lobster we knew we had a winner. Not sure if he agrees.

Has Bogey worn costumes in the past? If so, what kind?

He was a pirate last year, and in the past a little devil, and he has a tiny Gator shirt. But we do not dress him up too much. He is OK with wearing shirts but does not like things on his head.

What does Bogey do for fun?

Bogey loves to go on walks, go for a ride in the car and stick his head out the window. And he also loves to meet other dogs, especially big ones that are friendly.

Does he live with any other pets?

No, but he loves to visit his girlfriend Kiki, a female Yorkie that belongs to our good friends.

What is the funniest thing he has ever done?

Bogey has been known to steal a hot dog or piece of pizza bigger than him if his friends Jake and Kate accidentally leave their plates on the floor. And then he tears through the house with the food trying to inhale it before you can catch him.

Does anything in particular frighten Bogey?

He is not very fond of fireworks and Halloween decorations - especially if they move or light up.

What is his favorite treat/food?

He loves cheese and also loves Mini-Dingo bones.

What makes Bogey mad?

Squirrels and cats. His goal in life is to catch one.

What did Bogey think of this contest experience? Was it:

a) Ruff?

b) Row-kay?

c) Grrrreat!?

C. Grrrreat, except if he has to keep his lobster costume on too long.
