CITRUS PARK - CITRUS PARK - Advocates, administrators, presidents, animals and athletes.
The community submitted diverse name suggestions for a new middle school in Citrus Park. The Hillsborough County school board is scheduled to vote on the name at its meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The district's policy is that schools should be named for outstanding citizens, geographic locations and people who have made significant contributions to education.
Some of the suggestions included James Gatlin, a teacher, principal and area director who died in August. Others suggested retired principal Sandy Bunkin, McKitrick Elementary Principal Lisa Yost and district administrator Debi Veranth.
Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Andrew Jackson were mentioned, as was Martin Luther King Jr. The late baseball player Roberto Clemente was suggested. Former Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy received a plug, too.
Other names reflected the area, some with a twist: Odessa, Citrus Park, Citrus Grove, Citrus Bear, Citrus Pointe or Citrus Park Kangaroos. Additional animal-themed options were Jaguar, Panther and Raven.
The school is scheduled to open in August behind Citrus Park Elementary.
