Find Tutor For Students

Published: September 8, 2007

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Eligible families can explore free tutoring options for students at fairs the school district is holding this month.

Students do not have to meet any academic criteria for the tutoring but must come from families that qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch and attend certain public schools. Parents who go to the fairs will be able to learn about private, state-approved companies that offer the extra lessons.

They can compare companies and even sign up on the spot if interested, said Terrie Dodson-Caldevilla, choice communication manager for the Hillsborough County school district.

'This is such a great one-stop shopping opportunity for the parent,' Dodson-Caldevilla said.

The district will host fairs at seven schools, including one Sept. 15 at Leto High, 4409 W. Sligh Ave. in Town 'N Country.

The free tutoring is offered under the No Child Left Behind Act. Those who qualify must attend one of the 88 high-poverty schools in Hillsborough that have not met federal standards measuring progress.

Company representatives will be able to answer questions, and district staff will be available to help parents understand the process and sign up, though families are not required to enroll during the fairs.

The district's Web site suggests that parents consider the type of tutoring their child needs, whether they want the lessons at the school, at the business or in-home and if the child works best in small or large groups or individually.

Locally, the qualifying schools include: Alexander, Bellamy, Crestwood, Egypt Lake, Forest Hills, Miles, Morgan Woods, Town and Country, Twin Lakes and Woodbridge elementaries; Buchanan, Pierce and Webb middle schools and Leto High School.

IF YOU GO

The Hillsborough County school district will host Supplemental Educational Services Provider Fairs this month for families to learn more about free tutoring available to certain children. The fairs are from 1 to 3 .m. on Saturday at Middleton High School and on Sept. 15 at Leto High School. Other fairs started this week and occur from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at locations across the county. For information about the tutoring or other fairs, see www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/nclb/ faq.asp.
