Hayes, Dudney Come Up Big

Published: September 15, 2007

Jordan Hayes scored a goal in each game, and goalkeeper Darrell Dudney gave up one goal in five games as the Temple Terrace Spirit under-15 boys soccer team won the Atlanta Cup 'C' Division over Labor Day weekend.

Hayes and Torey Dean scored second-half goals for the Spirit in a 2-0 win against Carolina FC in the final.

Hayes redirected a low free kick by Skylar Wilks into the net from close range. Then, with less than 10 minutes to go and Carolina pressing for the equalizer, Temple Terrace was able to score a second on the counter-attack as Jesse Miller took the ball down the right wing and crossed, and Dean fired home an insurance goal.

'It was a beautiful counter-attack,' Coach Brian Dozark said. 'It all happened so fast, which was different from how the game was played. The game was very slow, very methodical because they were very much a possession-oriented team, while we're kind of a quick counter-attack team.'

For Hayes, the tournament was the first time he had set foot on a field in a week. Coming off a back injury he suffered playing tennis, Hayes rested for the week leading up to the tournament. That didn't stop him from leading the Spirit with five goals.

'He's played injured in a couple of our league games,' Dozark said. 'He just played outstanding. He's a real workhorse up top, very good with both feet, and just an exceptional player.'

It was also the first time the team had been out of state for a tournament. The Spirit were taken to a shootout after conceding a late penalty against the Tucker Soccer Association that tied the game at 1. Dudney saved two shots in the shootout as the Spirit won 3-1 to advance.

Dudney's saves in the shootout were indicative of his play throughout the tournament. Backing defenders Caelin Campbell, Isreal Santana, Kevin Harvey and Jake Baker, the Spirit were tight defensively all tournament.

'It was the best defensive effort in a long time,' Dozark said. 'Our keeper did an outstanding job, and our defense played well. I was very pleased.'

Turners, Lightning City Win Aloha Invitational

The Tampa Bay Turners won both the Level 6 and Level 5 big-team titles, and the Lightning City Gym won the Level 5 medium-team title at the Aloha Invitational at the University of Tampa last weekend.

The Turners Level 6 squad was led by Madalyn Golightly and Taylor Salazar, who both won all-around titles in their respective flights, but they were backed by strong performances by Sarah Devoe, Olivia Cecil, Mimi Gilbert, Kayla Mogelnicki and Brianna Barrett.

Golightly won three individual events, the vault, parallel bars and floor, and finished second in the beam to finish with a total of 37.450, which was tied for the highest total over all four flights with Emily Holt of ACE Gymnastics. Salazar finished with a total of 36.825, but that included a score of 9.700 in the beam, one of three individual discipline titles she won.

Devoe finished second to Salazar with a total of 36.475 and won the parallel bars discipline. Cecil didn't take home an individual title, but she performed consistently to finish second overall to Golightly in her flight.

Turners coach Brad Harris was pleased with his team's performance in its first outing of the season.

'For the first meet of the season it's kind of a situation where we're just trying to get our feet wet,' Harris said. 'We wanted to start the season productively, successfully, and the fact that they were able to come out in their first competition of the year and do as well as they did was great.'

In Level 5, the Turners got strong performances from Olivia Kent and Jessica Beltran, who both won all-around titles, as the Turners beat ACE Gymnastics by 0.100 for the title. The teams were tied after the first three disciplines, but the Turners got strong floor performances from Halle Goodwin (9.600), Abby Hawthorne (9.550) and Hanna Everson-Sagi (9.475) to lift the team to victory.

Allison Hellier finished second in her flight to Charissa Yutuc of Starlight Gymnastics, but won two individual titles, scoring a 9.400 in the vault and a 9.300 in the beam. Charity Chen also won titles in the beam and floor exercises, while Krysta Postlethwaite won an individual title in her flight, scoring a 9.500 in the vault. Sarah Sudduth won an individual title in the beam with a 9.525.

Lightning City Gymnastics won the medium-team division by more than a point from Victory Gymnastics despite not having an all-around champion in any of the five flights.

Baylee Holbrook and Morgan Colee both performed strongly to win individual titles, Holbrook in the vault and floor, which she shared with flight winner Brokkelyn McCauley from Victory Gymnastics, and Colee in the parallel bars.

Morgan Novotny also won an individual title in the floor, scoring a 9.200. Lightning City coach Rick DeSantis was pleased with the performances of Holbrook, Colee and Novotny.

'Those three are always pretty good,' DeSantis said. 'When the kids put forth that much effort towards practice, you just hope that when they go to the meet they can get rewarded for all the hard work they put in.'

Lightning City's Emily Aguila also won an individual title in the beam with a score of 9.325, while Shante Williams took a flight title in the vault.

Elswhere, Sydney Labban won an individual title in the parallel bars, while Jennifer Hayden of Temple Terrace won a title in the floor. Tampa Gymnastics Gabrielle Strong won a title in the beam while finishing second in her flight.
