TAMPA - Three elementary schools started the school year with new principals.
The Hillsborough County school board appointed the women last spring and summer to open positions at Alexander, Claywell and Woodbridge.
Kristina Alvarez had worked as assistant principal at Alexander, in Town 'N Country, since 2003 and moved to the head spot in May, when the principal retired. She has taught in Hillsborough since 1994, starting at Egypt Lake Elementary. She also worked at Chamberlain and Lowry before moving to Alexander.
Lisa Maltezos officially took over at Claywell in July after her principal retired. She had served as assistant principal for three years. She started working in the county in 1984 at Mitchell and Buckhorn elementary schools. In 1989, she transferred to a school in Dunedin and a few years later moved to Illinois, where she was a teacher, assistant principal and principal. She returned to Florida in 2004.
Diane Farmer moved from Crestwood's assistant principal to the top job at Woodbridge in June. Farmer started teaching in 1969 in Ohio and worked there, in Florida and in Texas until 1986. She joined Hillsborough public schools that year, teaching at Shaw Elementary and Essrig. She entered administration in 2000 as an assistant principal at Foster and in 2006 as Sessums' assistant principal. She worked at Crestwood for a year before moving to Woodbridge.
Farmer's predecessor, Elizabeth Uppercue, was appointed in May to be principal at Rampello Downtown Partnership School.
The Alexander and Claywell principals retired.
A change will soon take place at another area school. Westchase Elementary principal Joyce Wieland became the general director of exceptional student education on Aug. 11. But the school district agreed to keep Wieland at Westchase through the first day of school.
