A Bradenton man was arrested for not getting medical attention for a 3-year-old boy who he says ran his eye into a lit cigarette Monday night, Manatee County deputies say.
Cain O. Williams, 26, was arrested on a felony charge of child neglect around 11 a.m. Tuesday after it had been determined the child had not been seen by a doctor for more than 12 hours, according to a Manatee sheriff's report.
Williams told authorities the toddler was injured around the same time that another child he cares for, his son, stopped breathing and was transported to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, a report said.
The toddler, who is the child of Willams' girlfriend, was injured around 10:30 p.m. Monday, but Williams said he did not tell anyone while at the emergency room with his son.
When Williams returned to the residence in the 1700 block of 14th Street West around 7 a.m. Tuesday, the man told authorities the boy was sleeping and not crying, so he did not think the injury was severe.
Investigators reported that the boy's left eye was swollen closed and appeared bruised.
