LAKE MAGDALENE - Children at Lake Magdalene Elementary loaded up on books to raise more than $10,000 to benefit their school.
The money will go to teachers to use in the classroom and for school enhancement projects.
The students completed a "Read-A-Thon" last month, asking friends, family and neighbors to sponsor them. They had 16 days to read as many books as they could. More than 450 students participated. Ten classrooms participated 100 percent.
Liz Philpot's fourth-grade class received a trophy for raising the most money. Top readers and money-earners also received trophies. The Parent-Teacher Association gave away books to provide more incentives, some autographed by athletes and coaches such as Tony Dungy, Ronde Barber and James Shields.
