ODESSA - Jim Hawk won't be found living in one of those neighborhoods where homes are crammed next to each other and yards can be cut with a few swipes of the lawn mower.

"I need to be surrounded by land," Hawk said. "I need to have room for my plants."

Hawk has had a long love affair with gardening and spent the past five years participating in the county's Master Gardener program. He recently was named the county's Master Gardener of the Year.

Through the program, volunteers are trained by Hillsborough County's Extension Service about gardening and horticulture. Those volunteers then field questions from the public, give lectures and participate in community garden projects.

Marina D'abreau, the county's master gardener coordinator, said the county relies on volunteers like Hawk.

"We wouldn't be able to serve the public like we do with out dedicated people like him," she said. "We have a limited staff and he is a knowledgeable source to reach out to our community."

Hawk said he has a strong interest in fruit trees and rose gardens, both of which he grows on his acre of property in Odessa. He said in a given session he might tackle issues like finding the right plant for shade or the best yellow plants.

"I enjoy the program because it keeps your mind active and you're always learning new things," he said. "There are always new insects and new plants. I enjoy talking with others about the best ways to grow something and learn from others new approaches."

Hawk will be speaking at the Town 'N Country Garden Circle on Jan. 7 to discuss Dooryard Fruit for Central Florida.
