Road Work Nearly Done

Published: February 2, 2008

CARROLLWOOD - Work at the Anderson Road and Waters Avenue intersection is "real, real close to being finished," county spokesman Steve Valdez said.

Additional turning lanes, traffic signals, road widening, utility relocation and drainage improvements kept crews at the intersection since June 29. However, soon after Valdez was satisfied with the job, a problem was realized.

"I gave compliments that it has been one of the nicest intersections we've done in a long time," he said but added the tallest tractor-trailers have occasionally brushed against illuminated street signs hanging below the intersection's mast arm.

Valdez said mast arms are designed to accommodate the tallest of the high-profile vehicles, and it will take a few more weeks to get the illuminated street signs either attached on the mast arm or above it. He said no damage was done to or from the hanging signs.

The project cost, $5.3 million, will stay the same.

In other projects:

•CSX recently completed rail replacement that closed Armenia Avenue south of Busch Boulevard. Valdez said within two years work will have to be done where cars cross. He said the road elevation needs to be adjusted, and a rubber material needs to be implemented for a smoother crossing for cars.

CSX will continue work a few miles west of Armenia on tracks at Henderson Road during summer. Valdez said the date for construction is not set.

•Also in Town 'N Country, a public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Upper Tampa Bay Library, 11211 Countryway Blvd., to discuss traffic calming on Steppingstone Boulevard. Valdez said this will be the only public meeting on the traffic calming measure, which likely will include speed humps.

•In Carrollwood, detour signs are at the Valencia Road and Nakora Drive intersection, which will be closed until Feb. 15 during the replacement of storm water pipes.

•Hutchinson Road between Carey and Pennington roads continues to experience intermittent southbound lane closures because of telephone pole and wire replacement. Work is expected to continue through March 30.

•In Lutz, at the Lutz-Lake Fern Road and Boulevard of the Roses intersection, roadway reconstruction and installation of a mast arm traffic signal will keep crews busy between rush hours until June 22.

•In Town 'N Country, two projects on and near the Woodland Center Boulevard will last until June 6. Turning lanes on Waters Avenue, eastbound and westbound, are being constructed between rush hours. Sidewalks and driveways are being installed on Woodland between Waters Avenue and Bald Cypress Place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

•Other projects on Waters include the portion between Northbridge and Riverwood boulevards. Tampa Electric Co. is busy there with utility maintenance untilFriday.

Between Twelve Oaks Boulevard and Rustic Drive, power lines are being replaced until Monday. Also on Waters, a bus stop is being installed between Anderson and Benjamin roads until Feb. 15.
