LUTZ - Work is expected to begin this month on the Suncoast Parkway-Lutz-Lake Fern Interchange project.
Based on a rating that combines bid price and technical skills, Cone & Graham of Tampa has been granted a contract of about $8.7 million for the project, said Joanne Hurley, spokeswoman for Florida's Turnpike Enterprises.
The interchange is expected to open by Aug. 15, 2009.
Technical aspects that were considered in the bid include the company's personnel; its management programs; its roadway work, site work and landscaping; its maintenance of traffic plans; its project schedule and phasing plan; and its coordination of the project.
Other companies bidding on the project were Hewitt Contracting Co. of Leesburg, which submitted a bid of about $7.6 million, and State Contracting & Engineering of Hollywood, which submitted a bid of about $10.3 million. Both companies received lower technical scores than Cone & Graham.
Besides the interchange work, Steinbrenner High School also is slated for construction on Lutz-Lake Fern Road, with a scheduled opening in August 2009.
Lutz-Lake Fern Road will be expanded to four lanes. The first phase of that project widens the road from 1,000 feet west of the Suncoast Parkway to the new school entrance. That will be completed before the high school opens.
The second phase of the project will widen the road east toward North Dale Mabry Highway.
