Woman's Club Has Room To Grow

LAKE MAGDALENE - The women of the Tampa Lakes Woman's Club hope ringing in the new year will bring more members to their group.

The 48-year-old club has seen its membership dwindle during the past couple of years. The club has 39 members and hopes to increase that number by 10.

The club started as a senior women's club in the North Tampa area. As it progressed, the club had by-laws, committees and elected officers. Since then, the mission has been to "carry out cultural, civic, social activities and projects for the betterment of its members, community and nation."

"It's a social club with good goals," club President Millie Pittet said.

The club's activities include a yearly fundraiser, an essay contest for middle school students and scholarship awards.

The club has seven committees that handle the activities and projects. The club is also a part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Dottie Workowski, publicity and membership chairwoman, anticipates achieving her membership goal through publicity.

She plans to create brochures with information about club activities and goals, and will hand them out at libraries, churches and neighborhood parks and homeowners association meetings.

"I want people to come see what the club is all about," Workowski said. "We are not just work, work, work. We also have fun."

Workowski plans to meet regularly with three other members to find out what will work to increase membership.

She added that all new members must be referred and attend at least two meetings before being accepted into the club. An orientation follows the member's acceptance.

Meetings are at the Roy Haynes Recreation Center, 1902 S. Village Ave., on the third Tuesday of the month; bridge games are held on the second Tuesday.
