CARROLLWOOD - Monday begins what many Carrollwood commuters have anticipated for years: resurfacing North Dale Mabry Highway between Waters and Fletcher avenues.
Work for the $5.2 million Department of Transportation project will occur mostly overnight. From 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., northbound drivers will experience single-lane closures, and it will be the same for southbound drivers from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Double-lane closures may yield bigger headaches for drivers from midnight to 7 a.m. in northbound lanes and from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for southbound lanes.
Department spokeswoman Kris Carson said resurfacing projects are multiyear efforts, citing funding, design and issues such as drainage and sidewalks.
"I think a lot of people think when you resurface a roadway you just go out there and put asphalt down," she said, "but there's more to it."
She added that the department has a rating system for roads measuring the ride, including potholes and cracking, to determine its priority.
"This has been in the works for several years," Carson said.
The nearly three-mile project is expected to last until June.
Other road projects under way this week include:
•Construction near the Woodland Business Center off West Waters Avenue. The installation of sidewalks and driveways along Woodland Center Boulevard between Waters and Bald Cypress Place continues until June 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In conjunction with that work, the installation of turning lanes on Waters onto Woodland Corporate Boulevard also is expected until June 6.
•Waters has several projects lined up, including the nearly finished renovations at the Anderson Road intersection, due for completion Feb. 13. Shelter and sidewalk work for a bus stop between Anderson and Benjamin roads continues until Feb. 15.
•On Woodbridge Circle between San Luis Court and Woodbridge Boulevard, curb and gutter repair will occur through Thursday.
•Roadway improvements continue on Gunn Highway between Keystone Crossing Boulevard and Hixon Road until Aug. 29.
•On Waters between Northbridge and Riverwood boulevards, underground utility maintenance will last until Feb. 8.
•On Waters from Twelve Oaks Boulevard to Rustic Drive, power lines are being replaced between rush hours until Feb. 4.
•TECO also is installing poles on Memorial Highway between Little River Drive and Kings Point Road until Jan. 31.
•In Carrollwood, power poles are being replaced on Normandie Road near Gunn Highway.
•On Hutchinson Road between Pennington and Carey roads, Verizon is replacing telephone poles and wires until March 30.
