New School Boundaries Could Affect Five Middle Schools

Published: January 24, 2008

CITRUS PARK - CITRUS PARK - More than 1,500 middle school students in northwestern Hillsborough County could get moved to different schools under a series of proposed boundary changes.

Parents got a first look at the plans at a community meeting Wednesday night, and many were angry about what they saw. The school district needs to reassign some students to fill a new middle school opening in August in Citrus Park, and officials also want to reduce crowding at other schools.

The plans, which are not final, would involve transferring 1,024 students from Davidsen and Walker middle schools into the new Smith Middle. Davidsen, then, could accept students from crowded Farnell, near Westchase, and Walker could absorb some from Martinez in Lutz.

The district also has proposed shifting some Farnell students into Webb Middle, to the concern of parents who do not want to leave A-graded Farnell. They said they were worried about Webb's academics, and some pledged that they would refuse to enroll their children in the Town 'N Country school.

Here is the breakdown of how many students the school district is suggesting get moved from each school:
607 students from Davidsen to Smith
417 students from Walker to Smith
262 students from Farnell to Davidsen
145 students from Farnell to Webb
122 students from Martinez to Walker

The school board could make a decision as early as next month. Parents can submit input on the changes via e-mail to Steve Ayers, director of community and parent relations for the district, at steven.ayers@sdhc.k12.fl.us.
