Orr's Decision: Go Pro, Finish School?

Published: July 9, 2008

Basil Orr may have a difficult decision to ponder the next couple of years.

One burning desire for the 23-year-old right-handed kegler is to tackle the Professional Bowlers Association regional tour and discover firsthand if the game he began to polish as a junior bowler is now ready to make headlines.

Then there's college. Orr's got two years at Hillsborough Community College under his belt and would like to attain a general degree, perhaps at the University of South Florida.

Right now, however, both of those goals will have to be put on the backburner while Orr learns the ball-drilling techniques from BC Frye at Frye's Pro Shop at AMF University Lanes in the daytime, then rolls perfect games at night.

A week ago Monday, perfect game No. 3 arrived during the Frye Pro Shop League and it was only because Orr had the intelligence to move his line after games of 160 and 180.

"I finally moved to the right in that third game," Orr said. "I threw the ball 15-pound Hammer Raw Anger out to the No. 2 board and just let it rev back. I had only one shaky shot, that in the ninth frame, when I went in a little too deep. But the head pin and No. 2 pin cleared out the 6-10."

The 10th frame was three times perfect in the 1-3 pocket.

The 300, his second this bowling season, brought his summer league average to 195. Orr finished the 2007-2008 winter season at 202. And his first 300 came four years ago when he was a youth bowler.

Now it's back to the pro shop with one eye on learning everything he can from Frye in preparation for the pro tour and the other eye perhaps cast toward that palace of higher education between Fowler and Fletcher Avenues.

Meanwhile, in other action at AMF University Lanes, three 700s from the men highlighted series action, while Jodi Moores led the women.

Raymond Silvia's 279-737, Roger Baker's 289-725 and Chris Hickman's 254-704 paced the men, while Greg Neblett had 248-655, Adam Hall 220-642, Luis Massas 279-606 and Roger Bailey 236-574.

Moores went 222-589, followed by Valarie O'Neill 217-581, Cindy Clark 201-558, Maura Clark 204-508, Leanne Palmer 209 and Cheryl Sharp 185-490.

OAKFIELD LANES: Mike DeVore fell 10 pins short of the 800 mark with a 278-790 in leading the men's scoring last week.

Other men's scores were Lou Bartkowski III 266-739, Billy Herren 279-720, Wes Prochaska 276-709, Rich DeVillier 268-700, Al Kennon 266-671, Tyler Parham 267, Chris Rodgers 267-608 and Carlos Rodgers 267.

Barbara Martin and Susan Lowrance deadlocked for ladies honors as Martin fired 235-633 and Lowrance 234-633. Other ladies scores were Pat Smith 256-624, Melody Williams 248-621 and Patsy Newman 225-586.

SARDEGNA'S SCRATCH SWEEPER: The next Sardegna's Scratch Singles Sweeper at Pin Chasers Midtown is scheduled July 26.

Action begins at 2 p.m. with entry free $29 for three games over six lanes. First place is a guaranteed $250.

LEAGUE WORKSHOP: League officers and anyone else who is interested can participate in the league workshop scheduled Aug. 2 at the Alley at South Shore on Big Bend Road in Riverview. Sessions will be conducted at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
