UNIVERSITY AREA - Cody's Original Roadhouse, a steakhouse, is set to open in mid-August in the former Remington's Steakhouse.
It will be the second Hillsborough County site for the 14-year-old company, which has 10 locations on the west coast of Florida, from Crystal River to Bradenton.
Mark Weber, vice president of the company, said renovations to the site at 2836 E. Bearss Ave. total more than $1 million.
Upgrades to the 7,000-square-foot restaurant include new air conditioning, roof, walls, tile and bathroom fixtures, Weber said.
He said last week that seating capacity has not been determined because the seating arrangement has not been designed.
All the Cody's restaurants use a basic motif "where you should feel like you drove off the highway in the 1940s" to a gas station and a restaurant, Weber said. However, each is individually decorated with antiques and collectibles.
Weber said the site was chosen for easy access and that it is "highly visible." The company also liked its proximity to the University of South Florida, "and that that area is booming," he added.
The menu, according to the company Web site, includes appetizers of onion rings for $5.99 and chicken wings for $6.99; soups such as French onion and salads from $2.98 to $7.99; dinners of chicken, fish, shrimp or combo plates ranging from about $11 to $18; and desserts of cheesecake, Key lime pie and apple pie from $3.98 to $5.98.
There are several special nights, such as one for children to eat free and a two-for-one fajitas night. The restaurants also serve beer, wine and cocktails.
