CARROLLWOOD - A former Lone Star restaurant is one step closer to transforming into a two-story surgery center with recovery suites.
A Hillsborough County land-use hearing officer has recommended approval to rezone the 1.72-acre site at 11911 N. Dale Mabry Highway to allow for the medical building.
Developers with Tampa Pavilion Property Management are seeking to redevelop the closed restaurant into a facility that offers surgical procedures, recovery suites, an onsite pharmacy and medical office space.
The proposed rezoning project would raze the existing building, add a second story to the floor plan and expand the center's size to 32,000 square feet.
The bottom floor will be the surgery center, medical offices and 3,000-square-foot pharmacy, and the upstairs will have 16 medical hotel suites for patients recovering from out-patient procedures who don't want to go home or to another facility.
Hearing Officer Laura Belflower, who reviewed the request, said her recommendation for approval is conditioned upon the facility not growing into a hospital, according to her report June 9.
Two county planning agencies also supported the rezoning and ruled it is compatible with the surrounding area. County commissioners are scheduled to make a final decision July 22.
