TAMPA Eighth-graders in Hillsborough County outscored their peers in other counties on the state's annual writing test.
The state released results for the writing portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test Thursday morning. Fourth-, eighth- and 10th-graders take the test. Students craft responses to "prompts" they receive at the start of the test. The highest possible score is a 6.0.
Hillsborough's middle school students received an average score of 4.6, surpassing the state average of 4.2. Hillsborough had the highest average of any Florida district.
Locally, Farnell, Hill, Martinez and Walker middle schools scored even higher, with Martinez in Lutz landing a 5.3.
Fourth-graders on average matched the state average of 3.8, down slightly from last year. Tenth-graders dropped from 4.1 to 4.0 but beat the state average of 3.9, according to the school district.
"We have much to be pleased about, and I'm especially proud of our eighth graders," Superintendent MaryEllen Elia said in a news release. "Now we'll analyze all the results to find the big successes and the areas where we need more work."
