Candidates Cashing In

Published: May 28, 2008

LUTZ - These candidates don't cut deals in back rooms to raise campaign contributions - they sell food and other stuff.

That's what they will be doing from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 7 at the eighth annual Guv'na Flea Market at Bullard Park, which features the train depot building, at the northwest corner of Lutz-Lake Fern Road and U.S. Highway 41.

Terri Burgess, Sandy Elmore, Denise Hopkinson and Terri Williamson - who are vying for the honorary Lutz title - will use the market to try to entice customers to help them fill their campaign coffers.

The friendly competition for Lutz Guv'na pits local business people and residents against each other to raise money for various causes. The candidate who raises the most money wins, and the winner is announced during the community's July 4 festivities.

The flea market tends to draw a good crowd, said Auralee Buckingham, an event organizer. "The Lutz people love a flea market."

Last year's sale drew about 60 vendors, she said.

Each year, the market draws regulars who sell crafts, collectibles, antiques, plants, garage-sale goods and fruits and vegetables.

Vendors get a 12-foot-by-12-foot space for $15, but they must supply their own tents or tables, Buckingham said. Set-up for the event starts at 7 a.m.

You can reserve a spot by calling Buckingham at (813) 949-7481. Walk-up vendors also will be accommodated on the day of the flea market, if space is available.

Besides shopping at the flea market, attendees may want to check out a book sale next door at the Lutz Library, 101 W. Lutz-Lake Fern Road. The sale will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 6; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7; and 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 8.
