CARROLLWOOD - For music lovers who have longed to visit the orchestra but might be intimidated by classical music - or just want to brush up on their knowledge - a new program is here to help.
The Carrollwood Cultural Center has teamed with the Florida Orchestra to offer the new Music Notes program.
The cultural center will host four lectures in the discussion series to coincide with performances at the Florida Orchestra. The first lecture, held Monday, will cover composers Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms, featured in the orchestra's Masterworks Series.
Barbara Shepard, who works with the Florida Orchestra Guild, said the partnership is designed to build attendance at the orchestra and an increased interest in the arts.
"So many people are intimidated by classical music because they don't know that much about it," she said. "This is a chance for them to come out and learn a little more about the music before going to a concert."
Shepard said the discussions not only cover the composers' lives, but what society was like at the time period and ideas of the world.
The first lecture highlights two prominent composers. Haydn was an Austrian composer during the classical period. Known as "the father of symphony," he spent much of his career as a court musician for a wealthy Hungarian family on their remote estate in Austria. Brahms was a German composer during the Romantic period and considered one of the most influential composers of all time.
Discussions and musical demonstrations will be led by special guests, including Mary Ann Scialdo, artistic director of the Carrollwood Cultural Center. Coffee and pastries will be served at the discussions.
