LUTZ - Flu and pneumonia immunizations will be offered to the public at county senior centers - including the Lutz Senior Center - at various times this month.
Although the shots are available to anyone, the emphasis is on offering the shots to seniors, who are more likely to develop complications if they get the flu, said Belinthia Berry, public information officer for the Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services.
The shots are free to seniors with Medicare Part B. For all others, the fee is $25 per shot, though Berry said those with HMOs or other insurance can receive refunds from their insurers. The shots are offered by the Aging Services department and the Florida Health Department.
For seniors without a flu shot, a serious case of flu can develop quickly and worsen rapidly, Berry said. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the single best way to avoid the flu is to get an immunization.
The shots will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Lutz Senior Center, 112 First Ave., N.W.
A representative from the state health department will be on hand to assist those with questions regarding insurance or the vaccinations.
