TOWN 'N COUNTRY - A retired principal will become the chairman of a nonprofit organization that helps out local schools.
Manuel Duran, who retired from Alexander Elementary last summer, recently was elected chairman of the Love and Hope Foundation Inc. He had worked for the Hillsborough County school district since 1976, beginning as a bilingual teacher at Town and County Elementary.
The foundation uses grants and donations for projects such as tutoring and reading camps. It runs an annual school supply drive and this year provided supplies and backpacks to students at Alexander, Ruskin, Town and Country and Wimauma elementary schools and the charter school, Carl Sagan Academy.
Love and Hope's board also elected John Rodriguez as vice chairman, Marcos Lazala as secretary and Carmen Bravo-Rosado as treasurer.
