LUTZ - At least three northwest Hillsborough County groups are taking part in a global effort to improve the environment.
The Ocean Conservancy and Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful are coordinating efforts in the International Coastal Cleanup, with groups across Hillsborough County scheduled to gather at 8 a.m. and work until noon on Sept. 20.
Lutz volunteers participating in the community's Trash Bash will gather at Old Lutz School House, 18819 N. U.S. 41.
Volunteers from Town 'N Country will meet at Shimberg Park, 7001 Armand Drive, and volunteers in Keystone will meet at the Keystone Community Center, 17928 Gunn Highway. The Keystone group is scheduled to gather at 7:30 a.m. to do an Adopt-a-Road Cleanup. The Keystone volunteers are expected to finish around 11 a.m.
The local cleanup efforts coincide with an event that is billed as the world's largest single-day volunteer effort to help protect the ocean and its wildlife.
The Ocean Conservancy is coordinating international efforts, and Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful is coordinating local efforts.
Volunteers should bring work gloves, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, protective footwear, insect repellent and water.
Last year, 378,000 volunteers from 76 countries and 45 states cleared 6 million pounds of trash from oceans and waterways.
There are several other local cleanups planned on that day. For information or to register, call Andrea Barber or Christine Commerce at (813) 960-5121.
