TAMPA - Patients at St. Joseph's Hospital get extra care, thanks to a crew of high school students who give their time.
Each year, about 100 students participate in the hospital's Volunteen program. The six-week program is designed like a part-time job. Students experience the process of interviewing and submitting references.
Students perform volunteer work at the hospital and earn community service hours.
"The program is designed for students interested in working in the medical field," said Jacqueline Farruggio, spokeswoman for St. Joseph's.
Morgan Greabell, 16, spent his past two summers working in the program.
"I wanted to do it because I really wanted to help people," he said. "It was a great experience."
The Chamberlain High student, who also works at Publix, volunteered for about four hours a day helping with wheelchairs, escorting patients and entertaining children.
Interested teens can call (813) 554-8216 for information.
