UNIVERSITY AREA - The smells of paint and popcorn, as well as pulsating rock sounds, filled the air at the recent It's All About Kids Spring Family Festival.
The April 4 event drew families from the University Area to the play yard at Carlisle Lakes Apartments, where the nonprofit organization is headquartered. The agency, directed by Wanda DeLaRosa, focuses on providing literacy and mentoring enrichment programs for at-risk children.
At the festival, children and youngsters played games, jumped on inflatable bounce houses, sported face and arm paintings, danced with Buzz, the organization's mascot, and painted murals. They won prizes of books and coloring books at the games.
Members of the University of South Florida Lambda Upsilon Lambda, a national Hispanic fraternity, and It's All About Kids volunteers assisted with the activities, which drew preschoolers through teens.
Lambda Upsilon Lambda's chapter was chartered two weeks ago with eight members and two advisers.
"We the USF chapter were founded in late March, and we went right to work," said Max Lora, one of the advisers. "We heard they needed male role models."
