CARROLLWOOD - Carrollwood Elementary will get some extra space this school year thanks to a partnership with Hillsborough County's parks department.
New recreational facilities, costing $1 million, are set to open on the school campus next month. The joint project, started last year, adds two 1,700-square-foot buildings adjacent to the school's existing 8,000-square-foot covered courtyard and a covered walkway to the pavilion.
The county will use the space for after-school care and other recreational programs. The school will use the space for student activities.
"We won't use the space for classrooms," said Carrollwood Principal Susan Avery. "But on picture day, we can set up over there and we don't have to disrupt our media center. It will be for activities like that."
Under the partnership, the district will be responsible for daily upkeep and the county will handle the preventive maintenance and major replacement costs. District leaders said the joint project is expected to be a model for other school campuses.
The additional space will allow up to 150 children in the county-run after-school program, up from the existing 75 students. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sept. 3.
