FOREST HILLS - Lauren Calka, a sixth-grader at Most Holy Redeemer Inter-Parochial School, recently received national recognition for her artwork.
In January 2008, she and 10,000 other young artists submitted their designs in the annual Holy Childhood Association Art Contest.
Her illustration, which portrays Mary and Joseph on the journey to Bethlehem, was selected as one of 24 to be used in the association's 2008 Christmas e-greetings program.
And Lauren and her family were in Washington, D.C., recently to attend a special Mass celebrating the honor.
The ceremony was in the Crypt Church at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Monsignor John E. Kozar, national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, was the principal celebrant and performed the homily.
After the Mass, winners and their families attended an awards luncheon with Kozar and had the opportunity to visit and take pictures. The event concluded with a tour of the basilica.
Lauren's work, which was on display in the basilica's Memorial Hall during the holiday season, can be viewed at www.hcakids.org.
