Aplin leaves Chamberlain sidelines after 31 years

After 31 years as head boys basketball coach at Chamberlain High, Doug Aplin is stepping down.

Aplin said he turned in his resignation in May.

"I resigned from coaching," Aplin said Thursday. "Thirty-one years, that's enough. I know I'll miss it. I've been thinking about the last three or four years. It's a a part of me. I just decided its time."

Aplin, 55, compiled a 516-276 career record at Chamberlain and guided the program to three state final four appearances (1989, 1990, 2006).

Aplin will teach physical education at the school.

"I'll miss the part of competing in the games," he said. "There are a lot of good guys that are fun to be around that are fun and good for high school basketball. It's got to end sometime."

Some of the best players to come out of Hillsborough County played for Aplin. He produced Division I talents Fred Lewis (USF) and Jesse Salters (Florida State)

"I'll still be at games," Aplin said.
