CARROLLWOOD - The American Cancer Society is looking for people to participate in its Relay for Life in Carrollwood.
The event will be held May 15-16 at Adams Middle. People can form teams of 10 to 15 or join an existing team. Teammates collect pledges for the event. Then teammates take turns walking the school track for an all-night event.
"It's a lot of fun and a really special experience for people," said Cheryl Hedrick, community representative for the American Cancer Society. "You don't have to be an athlete to participate in this event."
Hedrick said some team members just walk a lap, while others support the team by fundraising and cheerleading.
"We just ask that at least one member be on the track through the night," Hedrick said.
There is also entertainment and activities through the night, as well as a survivor dinner to honor those who have battled cancer. Survivors walk the first lap and have dinner at their own hospitality tent.
Organizers expect 500 walkers this year. This marks the 25th year of Relay for Life. Last year, more than 20,000 cancer survivors and 100,000 participants raised $21 million in Florida.
