TAMPA - The first round of FCAT scores came out April 30, with Hillsborough County eighth-graders landing some of the highest scores in the state.
Results from the writing portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test showed the district's middle school students averaged 4.6 out of a possible 6 points on their essays. Two districts surpassed Hillsborough and two matched it.
Grades 4, 8 and 10 took the test, which was administered in February.
The percentage of Hillsborough students who tested at or above their grade level, considered a 3.5, increased in fourth grade and stayed the same for eighth and 10th.
Many area schools, particularly elementary, showed improvements. Egypt Lake Elementary and Martinez Middle schools had 100 percent of their students writing at or above their grade levels. The new Smith Middle boasted 99 percent meeting or exceeding grade level.
Schools are awaiting scores for reading, math and science, as well as the school grades. The state Department of Education will release those results throughout the month.
Some schools do not have scores because the number of students tested was too small or the school opened recently.
