TAMPA - For those who have longed to play a musical instrument but thought they missed the chance years ago, the Carrollwood Cultural Center is implementing a beginning band program.

The center teamed up with the New Horizons Organization to offer instruction and the chance to play in a community band.

"The program is really aimed at people who have never played an instrument but always wanted to," said Helen Michaelson, the center's education outreach director.

The center at 4537 Lowell Road will hold an informational meeting Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. Roy Ernst, founder of New Horizons, will conduct the meeting and be on hand to answer questions.

"When I started the first New Horizons band back in 1991, my philosophy was that anyone can learn to play music at a level that will bring a sense of accomplishment and the ability to perform in a group," Ernst said. "Thousands of New Horizon musicians have proven that true, many starting in the late retirement years with no musical background at all."

"We'll have instruments at the meeting so people can test them out and see what fits their personalities," Michaelson said.

Costs and schedules are still to be determined.
