CARROLLWOOD - Students at Carrollwood Day School joined the fight against breast cancer recently when they planted pink flowers across the campus in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.
All grades participated in the Sept. 25 Paint the Campus Pink event. The schoolwide service project helped to raise money in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Shelby Moore, a seventh-grader, lost her aunt in April to breast cancer after an 11-year battle with the disease.
"I'll always remember her being positive and never letting this horrible disease bring her down, even when she was in pain," Moore said. "She was an inspiration to me."
Other class projects included sixth-graders making large pink plywood ribbons; seventh-graders creating a large banner for the school lobby; and eighth-graders making a large billboard to display pink artwork.
Students also wore pink clothing and held a "walk on the track" to show unity and commitment toward raising awareness and support of the struggles that come with cancer.
