Canine business puts the Earth first

There is a new way to leave a green paw print on the earth thanks to a business now open in Tampa. Green Dog Wash promises to leave you with a squeaky clean pup and help the environment at the same time.

The full-service dog wash at 533 S. Howard Ave. is trying to turn the routine chore of washing the dog into a fun, environmentally friendly experience.

How does it work? Patrons bathe their dogs with eco-friendly products in water that stays at a controlled 92 degrees. Runoff drains onto recycled rubber mats over a drainage system that filters out hair. The hair is then sent to the California company A Matter of Trust to be transformed into hair mats, which are used to clean up oil spills around the world.

"We take things a step further by providing the products and services in an eco-friendly way," says co-owner Brian Corby.

The shampoos, toys, food and all the other items sold at Green Dog Wash are made with the environment in mind. Corby says many items are manufactured locally, "which not only supports our economy, but also cuts down on the cost of fuel."

Patrons say using the dog wash is a fun and easy way to care for their four-legged friends. "It's as much fun for them as it was for me," says Betsy Esquivel, mom to toy poodles Auggie and Miko.

Self-service dog washes start at $12, and the company also offers grooming, and socials for animals and their companions. For information, go to www.greendogwash.com.
