Gifts help fill Empty Bowls

CARROLLWOOD - Cannella Elementary fourth-graders had a chance to express their creativity with clay while helping others.

The students recently made gift bowls for those who will attendee the 15th annual Empty Bowls luncheon.

Cannella is one of almost 40 elementary schools creating the bowls that will go home with guests at the Nov. 19 event. The luncheon, in downtown's Lykes Gaslight Park, will feature a bowl of soup, bread, apple and water.

The art class at the school, 10707 Nixon Road, also turned the bowl making into a lesson about hunger in America.

It made an impression on students, who shaped the 96 bowls on Oct. 21. They were fired this week and will be glazed today. Art teacher Ralph Watts will deliver the completed bowls to America's Second Harvest of Tampa Bay, a food bank that organizes the luncheon.

"I liked that we were helping other people," said student Antonio Mejia, 9. "We learned that some are just less fortunate than others and we should help them."

Wendy Zella, Second Harvest's Empty Bowls coordinator, said food bank representatives visit the classes and make presentations about food banks and how they help the community.

"I think it is a great lesson for them to learn about helping others. It doesn't have to be money. It can be their time and talent," Zella said.

Sponsors cover the cost of the clay, she said.

Watts said he pre-rolled the clay, and the students were able to make them using a bowl-shaped mold. Then they added a design.

Kat-Kim Phan, 10, added flowers to hers.

"I liked that they were for charity," Phan said.
