Sights and sounds of the holiday season will fill Sims Park next Saturday. On Dec. 6, the city and its Cultural Affairs Committee will present its annual Children's Art Festival in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department's "Holiday Joy" concert. Things are tight for city and county governments these days, what with a slow economy and falling tax revenue, so reducing spending is the order of the day. That was the case this week in Tarpon Springs. The financial times there are financially straitened enough that commissioners entertained the idea of cutting from the city's budget for fiscal 2009 money for Christmas decorations. In the end, they decided not to go that far, with Mayor Beverley Billiris stating, "Somehow you just don't mess with Christmas or the holidays." ...more

OZONA - This coastal village plans to show its patriotic colors with an Independence Day fireworks display and its first annual July Fourth Golf Cart Parade. Lisa Anstett, co-chairwoman of the Ozona Village Improvement Society Independence Day Extravaganza, said at a recent OVIS meeting everyone decided it would be great fun to have a patriotic golf cart parade on the Fourth of July. ...more
