Loss Of Tranquility For the past few years our holidays have been ruined by pounding, loud music in the neighborhood. I've telephoned the police but was told by a deputy their hands are tied because they have no decibel meters. Apparently, Pasco County gave the decibel meters to Code Enforcement, which, by the way, closes at 5 every evening and is closed on the weekend. ...more

SEBRING — When Howard Jenkins retired from the Air Force, he used his veteran benefits to go back to school and improve himself. From his experience, he saw the shortcomings of the military and wanted to help others. After starting as a veterans representative in Winter Haven, he transferred to Sebring in 1992 as a local veteran employment representative for Heartland Workforce. Jenkins enjoys helping the young, returning troops, showing them how to apply and get their earned benefits under the GI bill. ...more

AVON PARK — Three weeks after the Boys and Girls Club's Avon Park branch opened at Memorial Field, the club is still getting a second portable ready, and is working on a deck to connect its two trailers. But membership has already shot up well beyond what Executive Director Wally Randall predicted. The branch's new location has 74 members, and 65 children can be found either studying or screaming, racing and playing around the two portables on any given weekday after school. That's slightly more than the number of kids at the club's main branch in Sebring. "We were expecting 40. On the first day, close to 60 showed up," Randall said. ...more
